The revolutionary treatment for erectile dysfunction(ED), Viagra has finally reached India to help almost 72.4 million suffering from ED. Pfizer, the leading manufacturer of pharmaceutical products plans to make Viagra available to all the lop leading stores in the 30 cities of the country. The drug carries a price tag of Rs 463 for every 50 mg tablet and Rs 594 for each 100 mg capsule. At the formal launch of the product the managing director of Pfizer Limited, Kewal Handa said that in India 72.4 million men in the age group of 40 to 65 suffer from ED. In most cases this results in depression and marital discord but now with the introduction of Viagra this problem would be solved to a great extent. Within the next two years Pfizer hopes to capture 10-15% share in the Indian market. Though Handa said the drug was completely safe by any medical standard the possibility of a few side effects were not ruled out. As per the international norm Viagra would be sold strictly on the basis of prescriptions by medical experts and practitioners like Andrologists, Virologists, Venerologists and Psyciatrists through renowned medical stores.
The drug would be imported from France in a single capsule format and the possibility of producing Viagra in India in the near future has been ruled out as the present demand in 123 countries is being met by Pfizer's two modern production units in France and the USA. A huge sum is being invested by Pfizer to upgrade its research and development facilities in India so that an environment would be created for the drug to be produced in India. When this happens India would be catering to the Viagra needs of the sub-continent as well as the whole of south and southeast Asia.
